The General Administration Department is one of the most important regulatory departments of the State Government. On the one hand the Department prescribes rules and procedure to be adopted in personnel matters specially issues concerning recruitment, training, career development, staff welfare as well as the post retirement dispensation, whereas on the other it acts as the cadre controlling department of Indian Administrative Service, Gujarat Administrative Service, Gujarat secretariat services, Gujarat secretariat stenographer services and Gujarat secretariat clerk services.
The department also coordinates with the two Commissions GPSC (Gujarat Public Services Commissions) and GSSSB (Gujarat Subordinate Staff Selection Board) which looks after appointment to the gazetted post and non gazetted post respectively.
